S.PACE FOR H.ANDMADE E.XPLORATIVE D.ESIGN

We are back in Maine after a cross-country relocation (again) in the dead of winter, having a baby, and hibernating for a few months. We are excited to get back to work and celebrate the summer with the opening of a shop and studio under one (small) roof.

Or…

Space for Handmade Explorative Design

will serve as a workshop, research center and exhibition space for Doublet. We have been busy making the SHED and designing new items that we will reveal throughout the summer.

Keeping within our philosophy of design SHED is inspired by…

  • personal narrative
  • solutions for the chaos of life
  • multifunction
  • straddling utility and humor

We will open our SHED on Memorial Day weekend, in Wiscasset ME conveniently located on Route 1.  If you are in Maine and passing through stop in to say HELLO .

COLLARED VESSELS

A COLLAPSIBLE BUTTONED FELT BOWL

Using traditional pattern making techniques we designed this bowl as though it was a garment.  The fabric transforms from a completely flat piece of material into a 12″ diameter fruit bowl. Made from boiled wool army blankets, and inspired by crisp shirt collars the points of the bowl meet and button closed. It is reinforced with wooden slats that provide just enough rigidity to support the contents.

ORGANIZED MESS

WOODEN MATS INSPIRED BY THE PILES ON OUR BEDROOM FLOOR

Clothing an furniture are closely intertwined, these mats explore the space between the two. With simple shapes and colorful finishes these mats provide the comfort of hardwood and a friendly reminder to clean up after ourselves. Expanding on the technique used to create roll top desks we designed tamboured mats which allows for easy shipping, portability, and storage.

Unisex Utility Coat

A COAT TO SHARE

Our tendency to share clothing inspired the design of this coat. Intended to be unisex and one sized, the jacket can have an oversized or fitted silhouette. Our interest in material that looks aged and worn led to the use of natural dye on vintage linen that we obtained from France.  The linen itself is hearty and when combined with the lengthy natural dye process of both weld and indigo a transformation occurs.  The weld jacket is over-dyed with iron to obtain a mustard hue that in some lights appears like animal skin.  The jacket has a relaxed feel and can hold a lot in its many pockets placed on two sides, in the lining and backside.
